BOTSWANA

About the Country

Set in Southern Africa, Botswana is a land of vast open skies, expansive wild landscapes and a proud commitment to conservation-first tourism.

Its low population density, stable governance and long-standing wildlife traditions make it a destination of authenticity and natural depth. In the remote east, the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers meet in what’s known as the Tuli Block. An area offering a unique Botswana safari — one defined by sandstone ridges, ancient baobabs and lush riverbeds.

The wild remains wild. Vehicles are fewer, lodges intertwine purposefully with nature, and the bush is more intimate.

“You haven’t been to Botswana unless
you’ve been to Mashatu.”

Stephen Lansdown CBE (Owner & Conservationist, Mashatu Game Reserve)

Botswana lies in the heart of southern Africa, known for vast open spaces and some of the continent’s most remarkable natural environments. Much of the country is covered by the Kalahari Desert, a sweeping semi-arid landscape dotted with acacia trees and wide grasslands. To the north lies the world-famous Okavango Delta, a lush inland oasis where seasonal floodwaters create a haven for wildlife. Nearby, the Chobe region offers dense riverfront habitats home to large elephant herds. Botswana’s landscape is defined by striking contrasts — from desert silence to thriving wetlands — making it one of Africa’s most scenically dramatic destinations.

Botswana’s traditions are rooted in the heritage of the Tswana people, who make up the majority of the population, along with rich cultural expressions from communities such as the Kalanga, Bayei, San, and Herero. A strong emphasis on community, respect, and unity shapes daily life. The principle of “Botho” — treating others with dignity and kindness — is a core cultural value and influences everything from greetings to decision-making. Traditional gatherings often take place at the kgotla, a communal meeting place where elders and leaders guide discussions and resolve issues through consensus.

Ceremonies and celebrations remain an important part of Botswana’s cultural identity. Bogwera (initiation for boys) and Bojale (initiation for girls) are significant rites of passage in many communities, marking the transition into adulthood with song, dance, and traditional teachings. Music and dance, including energetic styles like Setapa, are central to festivals and community events. In rural areas, cattle rearing and agriculture shape many customs, with families honouring ancestors during key life events. Together, these traditions reflect Botswana’s deep respect for heritage, community, and shared responsibility.
